Consider a donation to the United Way

Most of the organizations that do good for the less fortunate in this community get funding from Mitchell United Way. That’s why donating to the United Way, which recently began its fundraising drive, is so important.   2. jt – You ARE wrong and your post is highly irresponsible. Each United Way organization is run locally and Mitchell United Way does not support Planned Parenthood. That wouldn’t even make sense because there isn’t a Planned Parenthood in Mitchell and all donations to Mitchell United Way stay local.     AMERICAN RED CROSS – Dakota Plains Chapter
    Assists in disasters, provides training in first aid, aquatics, nursing and community volunteer service. Gives aid to members of the military and their families.

    Mission: “The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its congressional charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies”

    CORNERSTONES CLC
    Cornerstones Career Learning Center provides education and training for the Mitchell area through GED preparation and testing, computer and clerical instruction, industry training, English as a second language instruction, basic literacy classes,, and community education.

    CRIME STOPPERS
    Sponsors and Anti-Crime program through a Citizens Board of Directors in cooperation with Law Enforcement Officers.

    DAKOTA COUNSELING INSTITUTE
    Provides high quality mental health and substance abuse services for persons of all ages to Mitchell and area residents. Services include individual and group counseling, psychiatric and psychological evaluations, case management, halfway house and social detoxification, as well as educational and prevention programs in the community and schools.

    DAVISON COUNTY VOLUNTEER SEARCH AND RESCUE

    The Davison County Volunteer Search and Rescue Unit is an “Organized group of Trained Volunteers”. This unit is designed to assist local agencies in emergency and disaster situations.

    The Unit consists of 15 to 20 members with an organized style of administration that consists of a Captain, Asst. Captain and three Lieutenants. The Organization is administered by the Davison County Office of Emergency Management .

    Mission: To provide trained and organized response to emergencies and disasters and to provide trained and organized support to various emergency response agencies in and around Davison County.

    LOVE FEAST

    This agency is an “all volunteer” program which serves a nutritious meal two (2) times a month on Thursdays to those in need. This agency also gives out shoes and backpacks (full of school supplies) just before school starts to those in need of this assistance.

    LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES

    This agency offers financial, individual and group counseling services. These programs are available for a reduced fee depending on family income or need.

    Mission: “Inspired by God’s love, the mission of Lutheran Social Serviced of SD is to care for, support, and strengthen individuals, families and communities. To that end, Consumer Credit Counseling Service offers a community service dedicated to providing confidential and professional financial counseling on individual and family money management, housing issues, and debt restructure”

    MITCHELL AREA SAFE HOUSE
    Provides emergency shelter and direct services to victims and their dependent children who have endured physical, emotional, sexual, or verbal abuse. The Family Visitation Center provides third party visitation and exchanges.

    MITCHELL RECREATION PROGRAMS
    Offers a programs of varied recreational and physical activities for adults, families and the handicapped. Specializes in year round activities for our youth.

    THE SALVATION ARMY
    Assists the needy and less fortunate with food, clothing and other essentials. Maintains a year round Food Pantry. Provides food to the underprivileged and toys for their children during the Holiday Season. Also gives help in times of emergencies and disasters. Provides youth character building through the Wednesday Kid’s Club.

    YWCA
    Operates Kids Klub involving enriching academic, social, and physical activities for elementary children after school; Teddy Bear Treasures, rewarding healthy lifestyle choices for low income mothers with child care items; and Girl Power for girls ages 9-13. The YWCA supports the mission of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library with the Mitchell United Way. All programming focuses on elimination racism and empowering women through family support activities.

    ELDERLY AND DISABILITY SERVICES

    MEALS ON WHEELS
    Volunteers deliver hot nutritious meals to the elderly, homebound, convalescent, and mentally handicapped 5 days a week.

    MITCHELL ADVISORY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
    Our mission is to advocate for people with disabilities. Our purpose is to foster acceptance and meaningful integration of people with physical and mental disabilities. We create, develop, and provide education and information regarding disabilities and the people they affect. We work with community leaders, businesses, and others to encourage that buildings, facilities, and programs are accessible to all.

    LifeQuest
    Provides necessary training, services, and supports to enable people with developmental disabilities to progress to their fullest potential and become more independent and involved members of the community.

    PALACE TRANSIT/RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
    Place Transit provides public transportation in Mitchell and the surrounding communities seven (7) days per week. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) invites adults aged 55 and over to use their life experience and skills to answer the call of their neighbors giving anywhere from four (4) to forty (40) hours per week. The experience of a lifetime!

    PRAIRIE FREEDOM CENTER

    Provides independent living services for individuals with disabilities. Services include resources for adaptive items – devices.

    Mission: “to empower individuals with disabilities who choose to live independently.”

    SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER
    The Senior Citizens Center is located in the James Valley Community Center (JVCC) which is a recreational and educational facility designed by and for adults 55 and older in the Mitchell area. Several local senior citizen groups meet there, and activities and programs are held daily. The JVCC is to enrich the loves of older adults throughout the area and is also the home for the Place Transit, Senior Meals and RSVP.

    SENIOR MEALS PROGRAM
    Good nutrition for healthy living to those sixty (60) and over every weekday at five (5) congregate sites in Mitchell. Meal sites located in Ethan, Emery, Parkston, Spencer and Mt. Vernon. Meals are affordable, a great variety of food and an opportunity to meet new friends. Free transportation to meal sites in Mitchell.

    YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

    ABBOTT HOUSE
    Provides residency, education, counseling and care for troubled young girls while offering new opportunities in developing skills, values and behavior.

    BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

    The goals of the program are to increase youth’s self confidence, social competence and caring attitude. This is done through one-to-one mentoring relationships with a mentor who is at least 16 years old or older.

    BOY SCOUTS of Sioux Council
    Scouting offers age-tailored, family based activities for boys ages 7-20 through Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting and young men and women ages 14-20 through its Venturing program.

    CAMP ARROYA
    Operates a day camp and nature center which provides a location for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other groups to carry out environmental education programs and other retreats.

    DAVISON COUNTY CHILD PROTECTION
    This agency was organized to provide supportive services relating to the prevention of child abuse, neglect and delinquency.

    FIRST CIRCUIT CASA PROGRAM
    The First Circuit Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (FCCASA) seeks to promote and protect the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in court proceedings through the advocacy efforts of trained volunteers.

    GIRL SCOUTS of Horizon Conference
    To inspire girls to the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism, and service that they become happy and resourceful citizens.

    RONALD MCDONALD MOBILE DENTAL CARE -

    Assists local dentists in providing free dental care services to needy children in the Mitchell area.
