From the Associated Press:
SD commissioners give selves 86 percent raise
DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) — Commissioners in western South Dakota’s Meade County have voted to give themselves an 86 percent salary hike.
Annual commissioner salaries will go from $12,909 to $24,000.
Meade County Democrats Chairman Mack McGillivray says the board is comprised of conservative business people, and he is surprised they gave themselves such a big raise.
Commissioner Alan Aker says he believes the higher salary will encourage more people to run for seats on the board. He says it has gotten to the point where people need to be independently wealthy or retired to serve on the board.
