Police searching for man who jumped into river

We’re tracking this story today. Here’s some of what we know so far:

Local police announced this morning that they are searching for a man who jumped into the James River while fleeing from authorities overnight.

Mitchell Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg made the announcement this morning during a press conference near the corner of Gale and Shanard roads. He declined to divulge the name of the man but said the man is white and about 35 years old.

Overweg was asked if authorities believe the man to be alive.

"If he’s in the water, it is not very optimistic at this time," he responded.

  1. Such a bad decision for a young man to make. Thinking of the family at this time.

  2. Very sad. Please keep this young man and his family in your prayers at this difficult time. They are very nice people.

  3. This is so sad. He is a nice young man that had truely changed his life around at one time. My heart goes out for Chris and his family.
