Max Sandlin is a lobbyist, the kind of person who is damaging the American political process.
That’s the take of the Kristi Noem camp.
Max Sandlin is simply performing a service and staying involved in public life since he lost a re-election bid in Texas.
That’s the belief of Sandlin and his wife, Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.
For months, the Noem campaign has been urging South Dakota journalists to “expose” Max Sandlin’s job and his supposed shady dealings with his wife. The Rapid City Journal has accepted the offer and produced a story on that very subject. On Monday, the Noem camp, the South Dakota GOP and Noem supporters continue to press the story.
Herseth Sandlin’s side said she has not done her hubby’s bidding in Congress and dismisses the allegations. The GOP can’t point to any specific piece of wrongdoing but said it does wonder about the machinations.
Oh, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi is dragged in one more time as well. Pelosi is a San Francisco liberal Democrat and the Noem campaign is doing its darnedest to tie her to Herseth Sandlin, who doesn’t use the word Democrat in any of her TV commercials or in her campaign bio on her website.
It appears the GOP and Noem are aiming at SHS’s husband and the head of the Democrats in the House in an attempt to paint the congresswoman as a Washington player, not a South Dakotan.
Here’s one of the Republican broadsides:
“I would call it sleazy.”
-Craig Holman, Public Citizen
“You really can’t have a ‘cooling off’ period for family members.”
-Gabriella Schneider, Sunlight Foundation
“Special interest groups are constantly searching for a way of throwing money at the feet of a member of Congress. If they can suddenly hire the spouse of a representative to make their case, they’ll gladly send in $100,000 or $200,000 or more, knowing it goes in the pocket of the representative as well.”
-Craig Holman, Public Citizen
“A lobbyist is paid to get a result for a client. If it’s easier to get a result because you have a very close ‘in’ within Congress, then that could certainly raise some red flags.”
-Dave Levinthal, Center for Responsive Politics
PIERRE – “It is clear concern is growing about the relationship between Rep. Herseth Sandlin and her lobbyist husband. Herseth Sandlin says this is an issue of ‘trust.’ Well South Dakotans trusted her when she falsely claimed to be a fiscal conservative and then went to Washington and voted with Nancy Pelosi for trillions of dollars in spending and the failed stimulus bill. Only one candidate in this race has personally benefited from special interest lobbying dollars and that candidate is Stephanie Herseth Sandlin. Is she influenced by Max’s income as a lobbyist? Well that’s the $13 million dollar question,” said SD Republican Party Chairman Bob Gray.
