Who wants to run for council?

Mitchell city politics is starting to heat up a bit.

And with this winter, we’ll take all the heat we can get.

We’re starting to hear whispers of people who are interested in running for the City Council. There will be four seats up for grabs and two incumbents aren’t running for second terms.

Scott Houwman and Geri Beck told us two weeks ago that they were going to return to private life, although both said they may run for the council or another office down the road.

We’re still waiting to hear if Councilmen Doug Backlund and Dan Allen will run again. Neither has replied to e-mails or phone calls, so we will have to wait to see what they announce when they choose to do so.

The city and school election is set for Tuesday, June 7, at Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary School, 1301 N. Kimball.  Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

March 1 is the earliest date to begin circulating petitions and to file nominating petitions. The deadline to file for the office is 5 p.m. March 29.

  1. I wish council members would take the time to drive around to check on their city- things go undone till someone calls city hall to complain- take for example the Daily’s article on snow removal- if that be the case then why is snow on the sidewalk for over a week now in the 300 block of north main and on the 100 block of west third- this is our downtown- it should be cleaned up???
