Should RVers have to serve jury duty?

There’s an interesting story in today’s edition about lawyers in a murder case arguing over whether RVers with South Dakota addresses should be included in a jury pool. One of the lawyers made the point that if these year-round travelers are going to get the benefits of a South Dakota address, i.e. cheap vehicle licensing, a place to vote, etc., they should also have to serve jury duty when the time comes.

I must say that I agree. If an RVer and I both have a South Dakota address, why should I have to serve jury duty while the RVer gets a free pass?

I’ll be interested in your thoughts on the issue.

Police searching for man who jumped into river

We’re tracking this story today. Here’s some of what we know so far:

Local police announced this morning that they are searching for a man who jumped into the James River while fleeing from authorities overnight.

Mitchell Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg made the announcement this morning during a press conference near the corner of Gale and Shanard roads. He declined to divulge the name of the man but said the man is white and about 35 years old.

Overweg was asked if authorities believe the man to be alive.

"If he’s in the water, it is not very optimistic at this time," he responded.

More developments in doll museum trust fund case

From the Associated Press this morning:

SD court dismisses doll museum appeal

PIERRE — The South Dakota Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal involving a $200,000 trust fund left over from the closing of the Enchanted World Doll Museum in Mitchell.

The high court says an appeal by the museum’s nonprofit board must be thrown out because the museum did not give notice of its appeal to another charitable foundation involved in the case.

The trust fund was set up to support the Enchanted World Doll Museum by Eunice Thomas Reese, who has since died.

After the museum announced it would close, the manager of the trust fund asked a judge to give the money to another charity. A judge earlier this year ruled it should be handed over to the Mitchell Area Charitable Foundation to support a doll museum.

This case has gotten complicated, but I interpret this latest development to mean that the issue remains unchanged from the last time we heard about it. That was back in February, when a judge said the trust fund should be handed over to the Mitchell Area Charitable Foundation with the stipulation that the money must be used "for the purpose of establishing and operating a museum for the display of dolls having historical, artistic or other value." (Click here for that story from February.)

I’m not sure how the judge’s order can be carried out, other than to start another doll museum in Mitchell or to give money for a doll display at the Carnegie Resource Center or Dakota Discovery Museum.
